Discover Doulas in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire
Doulas can be a great asset to you in labour, but it’s important to find the right person for you.
Here I’ve compiled a list of doulas that have been recommended to me by my hypnobirthing and hypnotherapy clients.
What is a Doula?
Firstly let’s talk about what a doula actually is, when I first starting teaching hypnobirthing 10 years ago most people hadn’t heard of the word doula. Thankfully now it’s much more common to consider using a doula
However, if this is your first baby it’s entirely possible you’ve not heard about doulas until recently, and to be fair they’ve probably not been relevant in your life before now!
Doulas are trained professionals who offer support at some stage in the pregnancy and parenting journey, birth doulas will usually support you during pregnancy, birth and shortly after. Post natal doulas will support you after baby is born for weeks or months into your parenting journey.
The support they offer can be practical, physical, emotional, and informational support, they may help with older children in the post natal period or with some household tasks.
They are not usually medical professionals. During labour they can help provide comfort measures, advocate for the your wishes and help you through the stages of decision making, although their role is to guide you to the information you need rather than to give advice.
They may be there as well as another birth partner or as your birth partner.
Doula Services
Each doula will have different options and packages available, but here is a brief overview of the main options to give you a starting point.
Digital Doula Package
Support during pregnancy and sometimes for short period afterwards. This does not usually include attendance at birth.
This gives you someone to support you one to one through pregnancy via video call or phone to ask any questions of.
Birth Doula Package
Usually includes antenatal one to one, in person support as well as attending your birth. They will be on call for an agreed period around your due dates.
Post Natal Doula
Support after baby is born. This can include support with feeding baby, providing meals, support with other children.
This will usually include debrief of birth.

Sam’s Birth Story – A Home Water Birth VBAC in Aberdeen
I should start with the pregnancy and birth planning really. From the moment I had my first baby, I knew the second would have to be a homebirth. My eldest was born at 43+2 via emergency c-section, due to a long induction. Baby was fine, my body just got tired after...
